MCA portal keeps crashing—will filers miss the December 31 deadline?

As the December 31 deadline for annual filings looms, the Ministry of Corporate Affairs (MCA) portal is leaving filers frustrated and anxious. Repeated crashes, timeouts, and limited access have made it nearly impossible for professionals to meet compliance requirements, prompting a surge of demands on social media for an immediate extension.
With multiple overlapping deadlines, users fear penalties despite timely efforts, turning a routine task into a year-end headache.
Portal instability sparks panic among filers
With just two days remaining to file annual returns, the Ministry of Corporate Affairs (MCA) portal has faced repeated crashes and timeouts, leaving many professionals and company filers unable to complete statutory submissions. Users reported intermittent access failures, long system delays, and total outages over the weekend, triggering widespread anxiety about penalties for non-compliance.
Multiple deadlines intensify stress
December 31 is not only the deadline for MCA annual filings but also for GSTR-9 and GSTR-9C under GST, as well as revised and belated income tax returns. Professionals note that compressing three major compliance requirements into a single day is extremely challenging, particularly under the new amendments increasing complexity in Input Tax Credit (ITC) reporting.
Transition to V3 portal blamed
The MCA’s rollout of the V3 portal has faced repeated stability issues since its launch. Filers reported that the system is functional only during late-night or early-morning hours, highlighting load-handling constraints during peak times. Professionals argue that technical failures should not lead to penalties for companies trying to comply on time.
BCAS seeks deadline extension
The Bombay Chartered Accountants’ Society (BCAS) has formally written to the Finance Ministry, requesting an extension for GSTR-9 and GSTR-9C filings. The society cited increased granularity in ITC reporting, dependencies on audited annual financial statements, and overlapping statutory deadlines as reasons for the extension. The representation also notes that adjudication deadlines under sections 73 and 74 of the CGST Act coincide with the December 31 cutoff, further complicating filings.
Filers demand clarity
Professionals have taken to social media with the hashtag #ExtendDueDateImmediately, urging the government to either stabilize the portal or extend the filing deadline to prevent widespread non-compliance. Currently, no official response has been issued by MCA or the Finance Ministry.
Impact on businesses and compliance
Delayed filings due to technical glitches can attract fines and additional regulatory scrutiny. Experts warn that firms making timely efforts could still face penalties if the system fails, underscoring the urgent need for government intervention.
