Lodha family dispute ends: Abhishek and Abhinandan agree on brand rights

Mumbai: The Lodha brothers, Abhishek Lodha and Abhinandan Lodha, have settled their protracted legal and commercial dispute regarding the use of the 'Lodha' brand name. This resolution follows a mediated agreement guided by family elders and overseen by retired Supreme Court Justice RV Raveendran.

According to a joint press statement issued on Monday, Macrotech Developers Ltd (MDL), led by Abhishek Lodha, retains exclusive rights to use the "Lodha" and "Lodha Group" brand names. Conversely, Abhinandan Lodha has the exclusive right to use the brand "House of Abhinandan Lodha" (HoABL). Both parties have agreed that their respective companies have no connection or association with each other.

The brothers also affirmed that they would communicate this separation clearly to the public to prevent further confusion in the market. As per the agreement, Abhinandan Lodha will make no claims on Lodha Group or MDL or any of Abhishek Lodha’s businesses. Likewise, Abhishek Lodha relinquishes all rights to HoABL or any of Abhinandan’s ventures.

The resolution follows a long-standing disagreement that began in 2015 when Abhinandan Lodha separated from the Lodha Group to launch his own independent business. While the initial separation was formalised in 2017, disputes resurfaced over the alleged misuse and market confusion surrounding the Lodha brand.

In response, Macrotech Developers filed a suit in the Bombay High Court, claiming Rs 5,000 crore in damages and accusing HoABL of trademark infringement. The court, recognising the scope for an amicable solution, encouraged mediation earlier this year. Justice Arif Doctor of the Bombay High Court facilitated the process and appointed Justice RV Raveendran as mediator.

Efforts to mediate began in January 2025 and concluded successfully, with the agreement finalised in April. The press note also highlighted the family’s gratitude to the mediators and family elders whose counsel proved instrumental in achieving a resolution.

This resolution brings an end to one of the high-profile corporate disputes in Indian business and paves the way for both brothers to focus on their respective ventures without legal overhang or brand confusion.
