From ITRs to SIPs: What you’ll lose if PAN card isn’t linked before January 1, 2026,

If you haven’t linked your Aadhaar and PAN yet, you could soon find your financial life hitting a roadblock. The Income Tax Department has set December 31, 2025, as the final deadline for taxpayers to complete the linkage — failing which, their PAN cards will be rendered inoperative from January 1, 2026.
According to tax advisory platform TaxBuddy, the consequences go beyond income tax filing.
“Your PAN card will be deactivated from Jan 1, 2026. No ITR filing. No refunds. Even your salary credit or SIP could fail,” the company cautioned in a recent post on X (formerly Twitter).
Why the Link Matters
The Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT) has made PAN-Aadhaar linkage mandatory for all individuals issued a PAN before July 1, 2017, to improve transparency and curb tax evasion.
For those who receive a PAN between July 1 and October 1, 2025, linking it with Aadhaar must be done by the end of December 2025.
Explaining the policy, Niranjan Govindekar, Partner – Direct Tax at BDO India, said the rule now extends to those who obtained their PAN using an Aadhaar Enrolment ID.
“Other taxpayers who failed to link PAN and Aadhaar by the 2023 deadline have already faced deactivation,” he added.
Under Section 139AA(2) of the Income Tax Act, every person holding a PAN and eligible for Aadhaar must complete the linking process. A penalty of ₹1,000 under Section 234H applies for delayed compliance.
What Happens If You Miss the Deadline
If the two IDs remain unlinked beyond December 31, 2025, the PAN becomes inoperative, leading to:
- Inability to file or verify Income Tax Returns
- Delay or suspension of refunds for previously filed ITRs
- Missing or incomplete TDS/TCS details in Form 26AS
- Higher TDS/TCS deductions on transactions
- SIPs, salary credits, and investments are potentially getting disrupted
- Difficulty in executing or updating banking and KYC transactions
However, once the linkage is completed, the PAN is reactivated within 30 days, restoring all financial services.
Will Your Money Be Lost?
No. While the deactivation freezes operations, your money and investments remain safe. You just won’t be able to make new transactions, modify SIPs, or trade in stocks until your PAN is reactivated.
Who Needs to Link PAN with Aadhaar
As per a Finance Ministry notification (April 2025), anyone who got a PAN using an Aadhaar Enrolment ID before October 1, 2024, must update their Aadhaar details with the tax department by December 31, 2025.
How to Link PAN and Aadhaar
Taxpayers can complete the process online through the Income Tax Department’s e-filing portal — www.incometax.gov.in. The process involves entering your PAN and Aadhaar details, validating with OTP, and waiting 4–5 days for confirmation.
Experts warn there’s little chance of another extension this time, urging taxpayers to act early to avoid disruptions to salaries, SIPs, and tax-related transactions.
