Indian equity markets will remain closed on Friday, 26 June, with both the Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE) and the National Stock Exchange (NSE) suspending trading in observance of Muharram.

Commodity trading was partially affected. The Multi Commodity Exchange (MCX) remained closed during the morning session (9:00 am to 5:00 pm), but is set to reopen for evening trading from 5:00 pm to 11:30 pm. In contrast, the National Commodity & Derivatives Exchange (NCDEX) stayed shut for the entire day.

This holiday forms part of the 2026 trading calendar, which includes 16 scheduled market closures, nine of which have already taken place. Earlier this year, markets were closed for Good Friday (3 April), Dr B.R. Ambedkar Jayanti (14 April), Maharashtra Day (1 May), and Bakri Id (28 May).

The next break for traders will fall on 14 September for Ganesh Chaturthi, followed by closures on 2 October (Mahatma Gandhi Jayanti), 20 October (Dussehra), 10 November (Diwali–Balipratipada), 24 November (Guru Nanak Jayanti), and 25 December (Christmas).

Muharram, the first month of the Islamic lunar calendar, marks the beginning of the Islamic New Year. It is regarded as one of the four sacred months in Islam, during which warfare is traditionally forbidden. The period carries deep religious significance, particularly for Shia Muslims, who observe it with mourning rituals, most notably on Ashura, the 10th day of Muharram.
