Key takeaways
- Petrol and diesel prices in India have remained unchanged for 11 consecutive months.
- Mumbai fuel rates: Petrol – ₹103.50 per litre | Diesel – ₹90.03 per litre.
- LPG price in Mumbai: ₹852.50 per 14.2 kg domestic cylinder.
- Fuel and LPG prices are influenced by international crude oil rates, rupee–dollar exchange movements, excise duty, and state-level taxes.
India’s fuel and LPG rates have stayed largely stable despite global oil price fluctuations, supported by government pricing policies and strategic decisions by oil marketing companies. This stability provides relief to households and vehicle owners amid rising living costs.
However, petrol prices in India remain higher than in neighbouring countries such as Nepal, Bangladesh, and Sri Lanka, mainly due to higher excise duty and Value Added Tax (VAT) levied by central and state governments.
