New Delhi: The Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT) has extended the deadline for filing income tax returns (ITRs) for Assessment Year (AY) 2025-26 by one more day, moving it from September 15 (Monday) to September 16 (Tuesday), according to an official notification.

In a late-night post on X, the Income Tax Department wrote: “Kind attention taxpayers: The due date for filing of income tax returns for AY 2025-26, originally due on 31st July 2025 and later extended to 15th September 2025, has been further extended to 16th September 2025. To enable changes in the utilities, the e-filing portal will remain in maintenance mode from 12.00 am to 2.30 am. on 16th September.”

The department said more than 7 crore returns had already been filed as of September 15. Thanking taxpayers and professionals, it urged those who had not yet filed to do so without delay.

More than 7 crore ITRs have been filed so far and are still counting. We extend our gratitude to taxpayers and tax professionals for helping us reach this milestone, and urge all those who haven’t filed for AY 2025-26 to file their returns,” it said in another post.

Officials added that assistance is available round-the-clock through calls, live chats, WebEx sessions and Twitter/X.

The clarification follows confusion over rumours of another extension. On Sunday, the department dismissed reports claiming the deadline had been moved to September 30, calling them “fake news.” It reiterated that September 15 was the final due date before Monday’s announcement of the one-day extension.

In May, the government had already extended the deadline for non-audit cases from July 31 to September 15. The department said the surge in filings reflects stronger compliance and a widening taxpayer base.
