ICICI Bank warns of SMS scams: Protect yourself from scamsters

ICICI Bank has warned its customers about the growing threat of SMS-based scams. The bank reminded customers that cybercriminals are sending fraudulent messages to trick individuals into disclosing sensitive information through malicious links.
In their advisory, ICICI Bank advises, "If you receive a message claiming to be from a bank, government agency, or company, verify its authenticity by contacting them directly through official channels. Do not use the contact details provided in the message."
The bank further warns, "Anyone requesting an OTP (One-Time Password) is likely a scammer. Legitimate companies will never ask you to share OTPs with their support or security teams. Report any instances of cyber fraud immediately to the National Cyber Crime Center at cybercrime.gov.in or call their helpline at 1930. ICICI Bank will never ask for details related to OTPs, PINs, or passwords."
ICICI Bank has also outlined common tactics used by scammers to deceive customers and provided tips to help identify potential fraud:
How SMS Frauds Work:
- You receive an SMS from an unknown or spoofed number. Scammers use technology to make it appear as though they are messaging from a familiar source, such as ICICI Bank.
- The message creates a sense of urgency, such as claiming that money has been deducted from your account or that your account has been suspended.
- The scammer will try to trick you into responding, clicking on a link, downloading an app, or calling a number to obtain your bank account credentials.
Tips to Spot SMS Frauds:
- Sender’s Number: Be wary of messages from unfamiliar or suspicious numbers, especially if they claim to be from a well-known organization.
- Urgent or Threatening Language: Scammers often use urgent language to create panic, such as claiming money has been deducted or your account is at risk.
- Spelling or Grammatical Errors: Fraudulent messages often contain errors. Legitimate organizations typically proofread their communications.
- Unsolicited Links: Be extremely cautious with links in SMS messages, especially if you did not expect to receive such a message or if the link looks suspicious. Avoid clicking on these links.
