Why are gold and silver prices falling?

The immediate pressure on bullion comes largely from profit booking after the recent rally.

Gold and silver are also sensitive to expectations around US interest rates. Because gold does not generate interest income, expectations of higher rates can make the precious metal relatively less attractive compared with yield-bearing assets.

Analysts are also watching the US dollar, crude oil prices and signals from the Federal Reserve for the next major direction in bullion.

Gold price outlook

According to market analysis cited in the supplied reports, the ₹1,52,000-₹1,52,500 zone is an important support area for domestic gold futures.

The immediate resistance zone is estimated at around ₹1,55,500-₹1,56,000.

This means traders could continue to watch whether gold holds above the support range or resumes its recent upward move.

Kerala gold rates today

Based on the supplied local-rate information, Kerala retail gold prices on August 14 were approximately:

Gold purity Per gram Per 10 grams Per pavan (8g)
24K ₹15,359–₹15,513 ₹1,53,590–₹1,55,130 ₹1,22,872–₹1,24,104
22K ₹14,079–₹14,220 ₹1,40,790–₹1,42,200 ₹1,12,632–₹1,13,760
18K ₹11,519–₹11,635 ₹1,15,190–₹1,16,350 ₹92,152–₹93,080

The 22K gold pavan rate is therefore around ₹1.13 lakh, depending on the jeweller and the day's local rate.

Retail jewellery purchases can also include GST and making, wastage and other charges, so the final purchase price can be higher than the quoted gold rate.

Silver price in Kerala

The supplied local figures put silver at approximately ₹260 per gram, or around ₹2.60 lakh per kg in Kerala.

Local retail rates can vary between jewellers.

What to watch next

The next major triggers for gold and silver prices include:

  • US Federal Reserve interest-rate expectations
  • The US dollar's movement
  • Crude oil prices
  • Inflation data
  • Global geopolitical developments
  • Further profit booking after the recent bullion rally

Friday's decline does not necessarily indicate a major reversal in the gold market. The fall follows a strong recent rally and comes as investors lock in profits.

For domestic buyers, however, international prices and MCX movements can influence local jewellery rates with a lag. Kerala's pavan-based jewellery market can also differ from exchange-traded prices because of local pricing practices, GST and jewellery-related charges.
