DP World Cochin’s terminal sets new record with nearly 98000 container ships this August

New Delhi: DP World Cochin’s International Container Transhipment Terminal (ICTT) achieved a 51 per cent year-on-year increase in monthly throughput during August 2026, handling 97,952 twenty-foot equivalent units (TEUs), the global logistics operator announced on Tuesday.

The ICTT facility at Vallarpadam is operated by DP World, which is owned by the Government of Dubai through Port and Free Zone World, a subsidiary of Dubai World. The underlying port land and infrastructure are owned by the Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways, Government of India and managed locally by the Cochin Port Authority.

The record-breaking August performance builds upon steady container volume growth at the facility. Traffic at the hub rose sharply after recording 74,644 TEUs in June and 74,585 TEUs in July.

Between June and August, the ICTT accommodated 51 ad-hoc vessel calls while maintaining high operational efficiency. The company stated this demonstrates the terminal’s capacity to absorb extra maritime traffic and sustain cargo movement along major global trade corridors during ongoing geopolitical challenges.

Highlighting the growth, Hemant Kumar Ruia, country manager for the Subcontinent (India) at DP World, said, “As global trade evolves, we remain focused on delivering safe, reliable and efficient operations that keep cargo moving.”

Ruia further noted the strategic importance of the facility.

“As India advances its maritime and logistics ambitions, we will continue strengthening Cochin's position as a competitive trade gateway, supporting regional prosperity and the nation's economic growth."

DP World has also established Kerala’s initial Free Trade Warehousing Zone (FTWZ) at Cochin, which remains the sole facility of its type in India directly co-located within a major port.
