Bhogapuram International Airport set to transform air travel in Andhra Pradesh

New Greenfield airport promises better connectivity, economic growth and a world-class travel experience for passengers
After years of planning and construction, Andhra Pradesh is finally preparing to welcome one of its biggest aviation infrastructure projects. The Greenfield International Airport at Bhogapuram is expected to be inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi by the end of July 2026, marking the beginning of a new chapter for air travel in the state.
Union Civil Aviation Minister K Rammohan Naidu, who recently reviewed the project, confirmed that the airport is fully ready for operations. All statutory inspections, operational tests and regulatory clearances have been completed, and the facility is now awaiting its formal inauguration.
For passengers across north coastal Andhra Pradesh, the new airport promises much more than a modern terminal, it is expected to improve connectivity, reduce congestion, attract airlines and create new economic opportunities for the region.
A modern airport designed for the future
Developed by the GMR Group at an estimated cost of ₹4,500 crore, the airport has been built on nearly 2,200 acres of land provided by the Andhra Pradesh government. Located around 60 kilometres from the existing Visakhapatnam Airport, Bhogapuram has been designed to handle up to 40 million passengers annually, making it one of the largest airports in southern India.
Its 78,000-square-metre terminal, inspired by the silhouette of a flying fish, reflects the cultural identity of north Andhra Pradesh while offering modern passenger amenities comparable to those at major international airports.
During his inspection, Rammohan Naidu reviewed passenger lounges, terminal facilities and operational infrastructure and expressed satisfaction with the airport's readiness.
Benefits for passengers
For travellers, the biggest advantage will be improved capacity and smoother travel. The existing Visakhapatnam Airport has witnessed steady passenger growth over the years and operates under certain operational limitations due to its shared civil and defence use. The new airport is expected to ease these constraints by providing more space for future expansion, additional flight operations and better passenger facilities.
Passengers can also expect additional domestic and international flight options, reduced congestion during peak travel periods, modern check-in, baggage handling and security systems, spacious lounges and enhanced passenger amenities and improved parking and transport facilities.
The airport has been designed keeping future passenger demand in mind, ensuring it can support Andhra Pradesh's growing aviation needs for decades.
Improving connectivity
Recognising that an airport is only as efficient as the roads leading to it, the Andhra Pradesh government has simultaneously invested in improving ground connectivity. A dedicated road corridor connecting Visakhapatnam city with Bhogapuram has already been developed. Authorities are also upgrading several roads linked to the National Highway network while widening important connecting routes in the surrounding region.
To make travel more convenient, the Andhra Pradesh State Road Transport Corporation (APSRTC), in partnership with the GMR Group, is setting up air-conditioned passenger lounges at eight locations along the Visakhapatnam–Bhogapuram route.
These improvements are expected to reduce travel time and make access to the airport easier for passengers across neighbouring districts.
Tourism and business gateway
The airport is expected to become an important gateway for north coastal Andhra Pradesh. The region is home to several tourist attractions, including beaches, Buddhist heritage sites, hill stations and temples. Better air connectivity could encourage more domestic and international tourists to visit these destinations.
At the same time, improved connectivity is likely to attract new investments in industries such as information technology, manufacturing, pharmaceuticals, logistics and hospitality.
Experts believe the airport could also support cargo operations in the future, benefiting exporters of seafood, agricultural products and other goods from the region.
Regional development
Large airports often become catalysts for urban and economic development. With Bhogapuram expected to handle millions of passengers annually, businesses such as hotels, restaurants, logistics companies, transport operators and retail outlets are likely to benefit.
The airport is also expected to generate direct and indirect employment opportunities across construction, aviation services, hospitality, maintenance, cargo handling and transport sectors. For young professionals in Andhra Pradesh, this could create new career opportunities closer to home.
Airport charges
Despite the excitement surrounding the airport, one issue has generated discussion among travellers, the User Development Fee (UDF). The Airport Economic Regulatory Authority (AERA) has approved:
• ₹835 for domestic departures
• ₹355 for domestic arrivals
• ₹1,255 for international departures
• ₹545 for international arrivals
According to Union Civil Aviation Minister K Rammohan Naidu, these charges were determined after detailed studies of the airport's financial viability and operational requirements. However, several air travellers' associations have expressed concern, arguing that the UDF is among the highest charged at any airport in India. They have urged authorities to review the fee structure to make air travel more affordable.
The final impact of these charges will largely depend on how airlines price their tickets and whether increased competition at the new airport helps offset higher airport fees.
Investment for Andhra Pradesh
Beyond passenger convenience, Bhogapuram International Airport represents a long-term investment in Andhra Pradesh's economic future. Modern airports today are more than transportation hubs, they act as engines of regional development. Better air connectivity often encourages investment, supports tourism, improves trade and enhances a state's competitiveness in attracting businesses.
For Andhra Pradesh, Bhogapuram has the potential to complement the state's broader infrastructure ambitions by strengthening links with major domestic and international destinations.
As airlines expand their networks and passenger traffic continues to grow, the airport could emerge as one of the most important aviation gateways on India's eastern coast.
Final take-off
Although speculation over the inauguration date has continued for several weeks, officials now expect Prime Minister Narendra Modi to formally inaugurate the airport by the end of July. Once inaugurated, commercial flight operations are expected to begin within a week.
For millions of passengers across Andhra Pradesh, the opening of Bhogapuram International Airport will not simply mean a new terminal, it will represent faster connections, greater travel choices and fresh opportunities for the region's economy.
