Radio communication aids in evacuation and coordination during Wayanad crisis

Wayanad: In the aftermath of the devastating landslides that struck Wayanad, ham radio enthusiasts have stepped up remarkably, establishing a vital communication network that has been crucial for rescue efforts and saving lives.
The amateur radio system, set up by volunteer operators on the ground floor of the District Collector's office in Kalpetta, has been providing essential information to both affected communities and authorities. This system has proven indispensable as mobile phone services were available only to a very limited extent.
"The situation was dire, with mobile phone services available only to a very limited extent," an official release stated on Saturday. "District Collector D R Meghashree reached out to the ham radio operators, and they have been instrumental in keeping the lines of communication open."
The station operates with receivers, amplifiers, computers for logging and digital modulation, and other equipment. Ham radio operators use transmitters to relay information from the disaster area to the station, with a repeater setup at Ambalavayal Ponmudi Kotta aiding in the communication process.
The repeater was installed by the Sultan Bathery DX Association, a ham radio operators' organisation. Leading the effort are Sabu Mathew, chairman of the association, and Dr Abraham Jacob, a senior ham radio operator and pathologist at Sultan Bathery Government Hospital. They have worked tirelessly to ensure timely information reaches the authorities.
The district authorities noted, "They have set up a repeater at Ambalavayal Ponmudi Kotta, which has enabled us to extend our coverage to the affected areas."
"The operators are accompanying each rescue team, providing real-time updates on the situation on the ground," the release added. The ham radio operators have also been key in coordinating rescue efforts. The first team to reach Mundakkai sought their assistance to evacuate locals. "Ham radio messages came to their aid, and the rescue members were able to facilitate their evacuation," the release noted.
As rescue operations continue, the commitment of the ham radio operators remains unwavering, providing a crucial lifeline to the affected communities. PTI
