Kerala school holiday on August 5: Wayanad, Kottayam, Thrissur among 10 districts declaring holiday

Heavy rain continues to batter Kerala, prompting several district administrations to declare a holiday for educational institutions on Wednesday (August 5). With the India Meteorological Department (IMD) warning of widespread rainfall across the state, more districts could announce holidays depending on local weather conditions.

Here are the latest district-wise announcements.

Wayanad

The Wayanad district administration has declared a holiday for all educational institutions, including schools, colleges, professional colleges, anganwadis, madrasa classes, tuition centres, coaching institutes and special classes.

The order does not apply to residential schools and residential colleges. However, heads of these institutions have been asked to ensure students' safety and may suspend classes if required. Tourists have also been advised to avoid unnecessary travel, while people using the Thamarassery Churam and the Boys Town–Palchuram route have been urged to exercise extreme caution.

Idukki

Idukki Collector has declared a holiday for all educational institutions, including professional colleges, on Wednesday.

The holiday also applies to schools, nurseries, madrasas, Kendriya Vidyalayas, CBSE schools and ICSE schools. Residential educational institutions where all students stay on campus have been exempted from the holiday.

Kasaragod

The Kasaragod district administration has announced a holiday for all educational institutions, including colleges, professional colleges, schools, anganwadis, tuition centres, Kendriya Vidyalayas, CBSE and ICSE schools, as well as madrasas and other religious educational institutions.

The decision was taken in view of the red alert issued for Tuesday, the orange alert for Wednesday and widespread waterlogging reported across the district.

The Collector clarified that previously scheduled university examinations, public examinations and interviews will be held as planned.

Pathanamthitta

A holiday has been declared for all educational institutions, including professional colleges, in Pathanamthitta.

The decision comes as heavy rain continues and several schools in the district are functioning as relief camps.

Alappuzha

The Alappuzha district administration has declared a holiday for all educational institutions, including professional colleges, anganwadis and tuition centres.

The decision follows heavy rainfall, waterlogging in several areas, continuing rain alerts and the functioning of relief camps in various schools.

Previously scheduled public examinations will be conducted as scheduled.

Kottayam

The Kottayam district administration has declared a holiday for all educational institutions, including professional colleges, on Wednesday (August 5).

The holiday also applies to anganwadis, tuition centres and special classes. However, previously scheduled examinations will be held as planned.

Thrissur

The Thrissur district administration has declared a holiday for all educational institutions, including anganwadis, tuition centres, madrasas, nurseries, Kendriya Vidyalayas, CBSE and ICSE schools, as well as professional colleges, on Wednesday (August 5).

The decision was taken as a precaution after waterlogging continued in low-lying areas and heavy rain persisted in parts of the district. The Collector said the holiday was announced to ensure the safety of students and reduce the risk of rain-related incidents.

Previously scheduled examinations and interviews will be held as planned. Educational institutions have also been asked to make arrangements to compensate for the loss of instructional hours.

Ernakulam

The Ernakulam district administration has declared a holiday for all educational institutions, including professional colleges, on Wednesday (August 5) as the district remains under an orange alert amid heavy rain and strong winds.

The holiday also applies to anganwadis and tuition centres. However, previously scheduled examinations and interviews will be held as planned.

The Collector has directed educational institutions to make arrangements to compensate for the loss of instructional hours, including through online classes where necessary.

Kannur

The Kannur district administration has declared a holiday for all educational institutions on Wednesday (August 5) in view of the prevailing adverse weather conditions.

The holiday applies to schools, anganwadis, tuition centres, madrasas and other educational institutions. However, professional colleges and residential schools have been exempted from the holiday order.

Previously scheduled university examinations, public examinations and interviews will be held as planned.

Kozhikode

The Kozhikode district administration has declared a holiday for all educational institutions, except professional colleges, on Wednesday (August 5) in view of continued rainfall in the district and the orange alert issued by the India Meteorological Department (IMD).

The holiday applies to schools, anganwadis, madrasas, tuition centres and other educational institutions. However, professional colleges will not come under the holiday order.

Previously scheduled examinations and online classes will continue as planned and will not be affected by the holiday.

More districts may announce holidays

The IMD has forecast widespread rain across Kerala over the coming days. District collectors are expected to review local weather conditions before taking a decision on holidays for schools and colleges.

Students and parents are advised to rely only on official announcements issued by district administrations and educational institutions for the latest updates.

Rain alerts across Kerala

The IMD had issued a red alert for Pathanamthitta, Kottayam, Idukki, Ernakulam, Kozhikode, Wayanad, Kannur and Kasaragod on Tuesday (August 4).

For Wednesday (August 5), an orange alert is in place for Pathanamthitta, Alappuzha, Kottayam, Idukki, Ernakulam, Kozhikode, Wayanad, Kannur and Kasaragod, while Thiruvananthapuram, Kollam, Thrissur, Palakkad and Malappuram remain under a yellow alert.

The continuing rain forecast has increased the likelihood of holiday announcements in other districts as well, depending on local weather conditions and decisions taken by the respective district collectors.
