Vaikom: The accused couple and their accomplice who siphoned off Rs 42.72 lakh from a private finance firm are still on the run. Police suspect that the accused have not gone far and are somewhere in the vicinity. Former DYFI leader Krishnendu (27), her husband former CPM member Ananthu Unni (29) and accomplice Devi Prajith (35) are absconding, Thalayolaparambu police said.

Some locals claim to have seen Ananthu, a temporary ambulance driver of Thalayolaparambu panchayat, driving the vehicle a few days ago. The panchayat records  also contain details of the ambulance journey.

Meanwhile, there has been a strong protest over the delay in the arrest of the accused. Police said that the probe is on and that they are examining the evidence. Both the Congress and the BJP had come forward alleging that CPM’s top brass were involved in the scam and were protecting the fraudsters.

While the probe in the money extortion case was on, M.P Shukur, a Vadakara jewellery owner, came on the scene on September 30, alleging that he had been cheated of Rs 47.79 lakh. In this second case, the couple have been named as the first and the second accused.
