Iritty (Kerala): Driven by a dream to become a doctor, 24-year-old Unnimaya, a member of the Kurichya tribal community, has scripted an inspiring story of perseverance by becoming the first MBBS student from Aralam Farm in Kannur district. What makes her journey remarkable is that she dropped out of a BDS course after two years to chase her childhood aspiration of pursuing medicine.

Unnimaya, daughter of agricultural labourers C R Mohanan and Bindu, hails from the 10th block of Aralam Farm, a tribal rehabilitation area. Despite financial struggles and social limitations, her determination never wavered. She will soon begin her MBBS studies at Wayanad Government Medical College, having secured 37th rank in the ST category in Kerala's medical entrance exam.

Unnimaya had always dreamed of becoming a doctor and admitted that, even during her time studying BDS, her heart remained firmly set on MBBS. After leaving dental school, she spent two years preparing for the entrance examination entirely from home.

She had earlier studied at the Pre-Matric Hostel in Iritty, completed her high school at Iritty Higher Secondary School, and her Plus Two in Science at Kaniyambetta Model Residential School. Though she narrowly missed an MBBS seat the first time, she joined Malabar Dental College, Malappuram, under family pressure. But she couldn’t give up on her dream.

Today, with sheer grit and strong support from her parents and younger sister Laya, Unnimaya has overcome the odds. Her family, community and local leaders are celebrating her achievement with pride.

Though the cost of medical education is high, her parents believe they will find a way to support her — a confidence that has become a major source of strength for Unnimaya.

Her sister Laya, after completing her Plus Two, is preparing for PSC exams.
