Triple Talaq: 203 cases registered in Kerala since 2019, Centre tells SC

New Delhi: As many as 203 cases have been registered in Kerala since 2019 against husbands for pronouncing triple talaq to divorce their wives, the Centre has informed the Supreme Court. Charge sheets have been filed in 178 of these cases, while investigation is still underway in seven cases, according to data submitted by the Centre before the Supreme Court.

Deputy Legislative Counsel in the Union Law Ministry, Beo Joseph, submitted details of cases registered in various States, including Kerala, under Sections 3 and 4 of the Muslim Women (Protection of Rights on Marriage) Act, 2019, which prohibits the practice of triple talaq.

In Kerala, 25 FIRs were registered in 2019, with chargesheets filed in 22 cases. The number of FIRs rose to 38 in 2020, with chargesheets filed in 33 cases. In 2021, 43 FIRs were registered, and chargesheets were filed in 41 cases.

In 2022, 29 cases were registered, and chargesheets were filed in 25. In 2023, all 16 cases registered resulted in chargesheets. In 2024, 20 cases were registered, with chargesheets filed in 18 cases.

In 2025, 23 cases were registered, of which chargesheets were filed in 18. Investigation is continuing in three cases. Till June 2026, nine cases were registered in Kerala, with chargesheets filed in five and investigation continuing in four.

Across India, 20,686 cases were registered between 2019 and June 2026. Chargesheets have been filed in 16,562 cases, while investigations are still underway in 874 cases.
