Thamarassery Diocese not to screen 'The Kerala Story' before elections

Kozhikode: Facing objection from the public as well as from the political front, Thamarassery Diocese has decided not to screen the controversial film 'The Kerala Story'.

Earlier, it was announced that the movie would be screened on Saturday in 120 Kerala Catholic Youth Movement (KCYM) units under the diocese. The Diocese decided to refrain from screening the film prior to the election and to steer clear of any discussions pertaining to it.

It is reported that the Bishop of Thamarassery Diocese has given instructions in this regard to KCYM. The diocese backtracked from its earlier decision after facing flak from various walks of life.

Meanwhile, the KCYM Executive Committee meeting will be held on Saturday evening. The officials informed that a decision will be taken in the meeting regarding the screening of the film.

KCYM officials had earlier clarified that the film is being screened as part of an awareness campaign for children. It also questioned why some object to the screening of a film that has received permission from the Censor Board.

Earlier, the movie was screened in the Idukki Diocese and some units under the Thalassery Diocese.

Sudipto Sen-directed "The Kerala Story,"  which hit theatres last year, tells the story of a group of women from Kerala who were forced to convert to Islam and join the terror outfit ISIS.
