New Delhi: The Supreme Court on Friday has rejected the bail plea of G Sandeep, the accused in the murder of Dr Vandana Das, a house surgeon at Kottarakkara Taluk Hospital in 2023. A bench headed by Justice Abhay Shreeniwas Oka stated that while a liberal approach can be considered in bail matters, the gravity of this case does not allow for granting the plea.

The Supreme Court had earlier directed the state government to examine the mental health of the accused. However, medical reports submitted by the government clarified that the accused does not have any mental health issues. The government argued that Sandeep, who was under the influence of alcohol at the time of the incident, was fully aware of his actions. The government also contended that releasing the accused would pose a threat to society.

The accused, Sandeep, stabbed Dr Vandana Das to death on May 10, 2023, when he was brought to the hospital by the police for a medical examination. He claimed that he did not intend to kill Vandana and thus could not be charged with murder. However, this argument was dismissed by the trial court and the High Court.

The High Court, while rejecting his plea, noted that Sandeep had attacked several people consecutively with a surgical scissor before stabbing Dr Vandana, indicating his deliberate actions.
