Speaker cancels Uralungal's Kerala Assembly contracts over construction irregularities

Thiruvananthapuram: Speaker Thiruvanchoor Radhakrishnan has cancelled the contracts following reports of serious lapses in construction work carried out within the Legislative Assembly. The Speaker has now cancelled orders, including those sanctioning funds to the Uralungal Labour Contract Co-operative Society, which were issued during the tenure of the previous LDF government.
The Speaker directed that Uralungal be removed from the maintenance charge of the Sankaranarayanan Thampi Hall in the Legislative Assembly. Instead, this responsibility will henceforth rest with the Public Works Department (PWD).
The preliminary assessment is that large-scale corruption occurred in various benefits and contracts awarded to Uralungal inside the Legislative Assembly during the previous government's tenure. It is against this backdrop that the Speaker has taken strict action.
