Kottayam: Rescuing snakes has been a hobby for this timber worker and Kottayam native Subash. Recently, snake catching turned into a family affair as his son Anandu and daughter Arya also fearlessly joined him to catch snakes.

Subash used to rescue snakes from his childhood. He was always curious to observe snakes when other children stepped back in fear. He never allowed others to kill or harm snakes if any snake was caught in his neighbourhood. Instead, he led the snake to a sack and safely released it into a forest.

“I had rescued over 1000 snakes in the past 35 years. All snakes were handed over to the officials at forest offices,” said Subhash.

Arya and Anandu were also inspired to catch snakes by seeing their father’s enthusiasm. Subhash was also excited when his children expressed his wish to join his mission.

Now, his two children also accompany him to rescue snakes from adjacent regions. According to Subhash, his mission became easier when Arya and Anandu started helping him to rescue the snakes. Meanwhile, Subash attended snake-catching training organised by the forest department.

Subash used to rescue snakes only by abiding by the guidelines of the forest department with the recommended tools. He was never keen to display the rescued snakes or receive applause from the onlookers. He used to leave the spot as soon as he caught the snake.

Anandu, who completed Plus Two and Arya, a Plus One student now aim to secure training from the forest department in order to pursue their father’s path. Their mother Omana also supports the endeavours of the trio.
