Thiruvananthapuram: A vigilance probe is likely into allegations of bribery and official interference in the Excise Department raised by Seeram Sambasiva Rao. The Tax Department Secretary is set to forward his report to the Home Secretary, who may seek supporting evidence from Rao.

In the report, Rao alleged that two excise officials were involved in bribery. If a probe is initiated, he will have to submit documents supporting these allegations. He also claimed that Excise Minister M. Liju has close ties with a bar owner in Kayamkulam and will be required to provide evidence to support this claim as well.

Minister Liju has maintained that an investigation should go ahead. Reports suggest that the Home Department is likely to recommend a vigilance probe soon.

The report names Joint Excise Commissioner S. Vinod and Deputy Commissioner Ajay, alleging that they have been accepting substantial bribes. It also alleges that the minister's office has been interfering in departmental affairs, including employee transfers. According to the report submitted to the Additional Chief Secretary, transfer orders were being approved without the knowledge of the Excise Commissioner.

Rao was transferred recently at the minister's request following the controversy over bar licences. He submitted the report on Friday, shortly before relinquishing his charge.

Meanwhile, a decision on the appointment of the next Excise Commissioner is yet to be taken.
