SC to pronounce verdict on petition challenging Kannur VC's reappointment tomorrow

New Delhi: The Supreme Court will finally pronounce its verdict on the petition challenging the re-appointment of Dr Gopinath Raveendran as the Vice Chancellor of Kannur University on Thursday.

The bench of Chief Justice D.Y. Chandrachud will pronounce the verdict.

Earlier, Kannur University senate member Dr Premachandran Keezhoth and academic council member Shino P Jose approached the Supreme Court questioning the re-appointment of Gopinath Raveendran.

During the hearing, the court asked the state government how a person over the age of 60 could be re-appointed as VC. Kannur University's rules state that no one over the age of 60 can be appointed as a VC.

However, the government reasoned that this would not apply in the case of re-appointment. However, Chief Justice D.Y. Chandrachud observed that re-appointment should fulfil the eligibility criteria laid down in the Act.

Meanwhile, the re-appointment was vehemently opposed by the chancellor, Governor Arif Mohammed Khan, in the Supreme Court. If the Supreme Court cancels the re-appointment, it will be a huge blow to the state government.
