Kanhangad: Fish markets across Kerala are witnessing a sharp drop in prices following the lifting of trawling ban, with sardine (mathi) and mackerel (Ayila) prices falling by more than half.

Sardines, once priced at Rs 400 per kilogram, are now selling for Rs 200 or less, while mackerels, which previously cost Rs 300, are now available at just Rs 100 for medium-sized varieties.

The end of the 52-day mechanised fishing ban has led to a massive increase in fish landings, directly influencing retail and wholesale pricing. With large quantities now entering the market daily, fishers and traders report a buyer-friendly market environment.

While smaller and medium-sized sardines and mackerels are priced low, larger specimens still command a modest premium due to demand.

Premium hotel varieties also become cheaper

Several high-demand varieties used in hotel and restaurant cuisine have also seen substantial price reductions:

  • Pomfret: Down from Rs 650 to Rs 400 per kilo
  • Kingfish: Down from Rs 1,200 to Rs 700 per kilo
  • Shrimp: Down from Rs 250 to Rs 150 per kilo
  • Shark: Reduced from Rs 600 to Rs 450 per kilo

While sardines, mackerels, and premium species saw significant drops, some local varieties including squid have retained steady pricing.
