Kozhikode: Leaders of Samastha Kerala Jamiyyathul Ulama, an organisation of Sunni Islamic scholars which is traditionally close to Indian Union Muslim League, has not started to slam the League at public gatherings. At a recent meeting at Mukkam, Sunni Youth Movement (SYS) state working secretary Abdul Hameed Faizy Ambalakadavu, criticised Muslim League without mentioning the political party’s name.

In recent times, the Muslim League has been constantly questioning the cooperation between the state government and Samastha. Pinarayi Vijayan has opened a direct channel with the scholars’ organisation, which irks Muslim League.

Samastha feels that “malicious campaigns” are being run against the organisation over its cooperation with the government and joint protests with CPM against Citizenship (Amendment) Act and the Uniform Civil Code. In the meetings, the top leaders of the organisation explain these to the followers.

“Jifri Muthukoya Thangal’s intervention led Pinarayi Vijayan to freeze the order or hand over Waqf appointments to PSC. Since then, these people (Muslim League leaders) enrolled Thangal in CPM,” said Ambalakkadavu. He criticised League general secretary PMA Salam for declaring protests at mosques on Waqf issue without discussing it with Samastha. The scholars’ organisation had distanced itself from the protest announced by the League, raising many eyebrows.

Ambalakkadavu said on UCC, the organisation is willing to cooperate with all the parties. It should be noted that Muslim League had earlier declined CPM’s invitation to attend its anti-UCC seminar. But then the Muslim League-led Muslim Coordination Committee (MCC) invited CPM to attend their anti-UCC seminar. “I will not go there, but you can come here. How do you explain this?,” he asked at the meeting.

Ambalakkadavu also reminded the League cadres of how the party had joined the government led by late EMS Namboodiripad, who opposed Sharia laws.
