Rare double transplant surgery: Kerala man gets new lease of life as sister and brother-in-law step in

Kochi: In a moving act of family solidarity, Sreenath B Nair, a 43-year-old native of Aluva, Kerala, has been given a new lease of life after receiving a kidney from his sister and a liver from her husband, in a rare and complex dual organ transplant.

Sreenath had been undergoing treatment at Aster Medcity, Kochi, for advanced liver cirrhosis and kidney failure, with his condition worsening rapidly and a simultaneous liver-kidney transplant becoming his only chance of survival.

Sister donates kidney, brother-in-law donates liver

As the search for donors intensified, it was Sreenath’s younger sister, Sreedevi, who came forward first, volunteering to donate one of her kidneys. In a second act of selflessness, MN Vipin, Sreedevi's husband, offered to donate a portion of his liver. Vipin is an assistant manager at Joy Alukkas' MG Road branch. Together, their donations made the complex dual transplant possible.

Sreenath, who runs a travel agency in Aluva, had been battling deteriorating health and a bleak prognosis, with his wife Lakshmi Priya by his side in the search for matching donors.

Medical team pulls off high-risk surgery

The transplant surgery was carried out successfully at Aster Medcity, under the leadership of Dr Mathew Jacob, Senior Consultant in Hepato-Pancreato-Biliary and Abdominal Multi-Organ Transplant, and Dr V Narayanan Unni, Senior Consultant in Nephrology.
