Ramya Haridas alleges conspiracy; Youth Congress accuses Kerala MLA of misusing women’s safety laws
Thiruvananthapuram: Tensions within the Congress fold have escalated following disputes surrounding the Kizhuvilam Co-operative Bank election, with the Youth Congress sharply criticising Chirayinkeezhu MLA Ramya Haridas.
Youth Congress Thiruvananthapuram district president Nemom Shajeer accused her of “misusing laws intended for women’s protection” and warned that “the police station will be blockaded if party activist Sajith is arrested over the incident”. Shajeer added that the district unit has formally conveyed its stance to the state leadership.
Meanwhile, responding to the allegations, Ramya Haridas expressed confidence that both the party leadership and the Home Department would take stern action. She stated that everyone knows she has been subjected to severe cyberattacks on social media for a very long time, and she expects decisive action regarding these ongoing issues.
Clarifying the events leading to the confrontation, Ramya detailed what she believes was a deliberate setup. She recounted meeting an individual named Sajad near a poultry shop, who claimed he acted against her at the behest of Sajith and Vishwan after she refused to support their panel in the bank election.
Sajad invited her to his nearby residence, assuring her that his wife and two children were home, and she noted that CCTV footage from the Pulimoodu area would confirm he guided her to the house.
It was while she was inside discussing the matter that a group gathered outside, confirming her suspicion of a meticulously planned conspiracy spanning several months. She added that when she questioned him directly regarding defamatory social media posts, he admitted to posting them multiple times.
The dispute originated from the Kizhuvilam Bank elections, where local Congress workers split into two competing factions. Despite intervention by KPCC general secretary Neyyattinkara Sanal, along with DCC official Vishwanathan Nair and Block president Abhayan, neither side agreed to a compromise.
Ramya stated that as an elected representative, she chose to remain neutral since workers from both factions belonged to the Congress party. She abstained from attending conventions held by either group and communicated this decision clearly. She claimed, however, this neutral stance reportedly infuriated one faction, leading Sajith and Vishwanathan Nair to orchestrate a relentless two-month cyber abuse campaign against her across social media and WhatsApp groups.
