Rain intensifies in Kerala; Red alert in 5 districts on Sunday and Monday

Kozhikode: Heavy rain is likely to continue in the state. The India Meteorological Department has issued Red and Orange alerts in various districts on Sunday and Monday.

A Red Alert has been declared in the districts of Malappuram, Kozhikode, Wayanad, Kannur, and Kasaragod for Sunday and Monday, with predictions of over 204.4 mm of rainfall within 24 hours.

On Sunday, an Orange Alert is in effect in Thiruvananthapuram, Kollam, Pathanamthitta, Alappuzha, Kottayam, Idukki, Ernakulam, Thrissur, and Palakkad districts.

On Monday, Pathanamthitta, Kottayam, Idukki, Ernakulam, Thrissur, and Palakkad districts are under Orange Alert.

On Tuesday, Thrissur, Palakkad, Malappuram, Kozhikode, Wayanad, Kannur, and Kasaragod districts will be under Orange Alert. The rainfall in these areas is expected to range from 115.6 mm to 204.4 mm within 24 hours.

A Yellow Alert has been issued for Thiruvananthapuram, Kollam, and Alappuzha districts on Monday, and for Pathanamthitta, Alappuzha, Kottayam, Idukki, and Ernakulam on Tuesday.

The Yellow Alert continues on Wednesday for Alappuzha, Ernakulam, Thrissur, Malappuram, Kozhikode, Kannur, and Kasaragod, and on Thursday for Kozhikode, Kannur, and Kasaragod.

The IMD defines heavy rain as rainfall between 64.5 mm and 115.5 mm in 24 hours.

Flash floods, waterlogging, and disruptions in daily life have already been reported in parts of the state.
