Kozhikode: Congress leader Rahul Gandhi on Wednesday paid a heartfelt tribute to the dedication of Kerala nurses, recounting how they provided round-the-clock care during his mother’s hospitalisation.

Speaking online at a public event at Kozhikode Beach, Rahul Gandhi shared a personal story highlighting the unwavering commitment of nurses from Kerala, who comfort patients through the night while the rest of the world sleeps.

"I would have liked to come there, but I was forced to stay in today and was unable to come. Yesterday, my mother was hospitalised, and I, as a son, was quite worried about her and so decided to stay with her. I know that the people of Kerala will understand this. Last night, I was sleeping in my mother's room, in the hospital room, on a little sofa and like any son, I was extremely worried about my mother's health. The whole night, I was only comforted by one thing. I was comforted by a nurse from Kerala who came in every hour to check on my mother. Every single hour, she would come, she would check my mother, she would smile, she would hold my mother's hand, and I was thinking to myself, how many sons, daughters, brothers, sisters have nurses from Kerala comforted in their difficult moments? Early morning, I asked her do you sleep at night or do you work the whole night? And she said, no, I do not sleep at night. I work all night. While the whole world sleeps, women from Kerala, not only in Kerala but in Delhi, in the rest of the country, in the rest of the world, are comforting people, holding people's hands and making them comfortable."

Rahul Gandhi used the moment to highlight the broader contribution of Kerala nurses, calling attention to the vital role women from Kerala play in healthcare, not only in the state but across India and globally.

The Congress leader also intertwined his tribute with remarks on the upcoming Kerala Assembly elections 2026, alleging that while nurses and healthcare workers are dedicated to public service, political leadership should also be accountable to the people of Kerala.

Rahul Gandhi’s reflections underscore both the sacrifices of healthcare workers from Kerala and the importance of recognising frontline contributions during crises, reminding the public of the human stories behind care and commitment.
