Professor dies after heart attack during Onam celebration at Kochi college

Kochi: A college professor tragically passed away during Onam celebrations at a college in the city on Wednesday.

The deceased has been identified as James V. George, a 38-year-old native of Thodupuzha and Assistant Professor in the Commerce Department at Sacred Heart College, Thevara.

He suffered a heart attack and collapsed shortly after the tug-of-war competition held during the Onam celebrations at the college. Initially examined at the college clinic and found to have no immediate issues, he collapsed again while resting there. Despite being rushed to the hospital, his life could not be saved.

The incident occurred during the Onam celebrations for the teaching staff. James, the staff secretary, was responsible for coordinating the events and arranging the lunch for the teachers.

He joined the Department of Commerce at Sacred Heart College, Thevara, in 2014 as an Assistant Professor. He was also a member of the Commerce PG Board of Studies at Mahatma Gandhi University. James was pursuing a PhD in Finance and had published three books on the subject.

He is survived by his wife Sona, an assistant professor at Newman College, Thodupuzha and son Varghese. 

The body will be taken to his native place in Nakapuzha, Thodupuzha, after being placed at Sacred Heart College, Thevara, for public homage from 8:30 a.m. to 9:30 a.m. on Thursday. The funeral will be held on Saturday evening.
