PM Modi to visit Thrissur on March 29 ahead of Polls: Essential traffic advisory and road closures

Thrissur: As part of the first phase of the Kerala Assembly election campaign, Prime Minister Narendra Modi is scheduled to visit Thrissur on Sunday, March 29. The BJP-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA) will hold two major events in the state: one in Palakkad and another in Thrissur.
According to BJP State General Secretary M T Ramesh, the first event, an NDA public meeting, will be held at Palakkad at 2:00 pm. This will be followed by a roadshow at Thrissur’s Swaraj Round at 4:00 pm.
For the second phase of campaigning, the Prime Minister is expected to visit Kerala on April 3, with planned events in Thiruvananthapuram and Alappuzha. A roadshow in Thiruvananthapuram is also under consideration.
Traffic advisory and restrictions
Sub-Inspector of Police, Traffic Enforcement Unit, Thrissur City, has issued an advisory regarding the Prime Minister’s visit. Traffic restrictions will be in effect in Thrissur city and surrounding areas from 2:00 pm to 6:30 pm on March 28-29, 2026.
Key points include
- No parking is allowed on Swaraj Round or adjacent roads during the restriction period.
- Citizens are urged to avoid bringing private vehicles into the city unless necessary to prevent congestion.
- Multi-axle trailers and heavy vehicles are barred from entering city limits one hour before the VVIP event. Entry will only be permitted after the Prime Minister departs.
- Vehicles on highways must park without obstructing other traffic.
Route diversions for private and public transport
From Ernakulam to Thrissur: Vehicles from Paliyekkara Toll plaza should turn left and must use Thalore Bypass, Ollur, Kuriachira, Mundupalam and Sakthan route to Thrissur.
From Thrissur to Ernakulam: Vehicles should turn right from Manorama junction and proceed via Mundupalam, Kuriachira, Ollur and Thalore Bypass route to Ernakulam.
Palakkad, Peechi, Mannamangalam, Puthur, and Valakkavu areas: Vehicles should pass under Kuttanellur Bridge, Ancheri, Mar Aprem Church and Mission Quarters to reach Thrissur. Note that vehicles will not be allowed to move toward Thrissur under the Mannuthi flyover these days.
Northern & Western areas: Kozhikode, Guruvayur, Kunnamkulam, and Adatt: Turn right from Lulu Junction via Ayyanthole and end service at West Fort. Returning will be via West Fort, Ayyanthole Civil Lane, Ayyanthole Ground, Lulu Junction route.
Vadanappally, Anthikad, Kanjani(via West Fort): Buses from West Fort will proceed via Calvary Road, terminating at Thoppinmoola Junction, Nethaji Ground, before returning to West Fort along the same route.
Other local routes
- From Mannuthy, Mukkattukara, Nellankara: Buses will reach Pension Moola Junction, enter the North Stand via Chembukavu, Ramanilayam, and Aswini Junction, and return via Stadium Junction.
- From Chelakkara, Wadakkanchery, Ottapalam, Pazhayannur, Thiruvilwamala, Medical College, Athani, Kottekkad: Services from Peringavu will reach Kolothumpadam via the Aswini Junction, enter the North Stand, and return via Stadium Junction.
- From Cheroor, Pallimoola, Mattampuram, and Kundukad: After reaching Town Hall Junction via Balabhavan, buses will turn right, enter the North Stand via Ramanilayam and Stadium Junction through Aswini Junction, and return via Stadium Junction.
- From Kodungallur, Irinjalakuda, Thriprayar, Cherpu (via Koorkenchery): Upon reaching Balya Junction, buses will turn right, enter Sakthan Stand, and return via Koorkenchery. Vehicles coming via West Fort should turn left at Koorkenchery, passing through Vadookara and Aranattukkara.
- From Ollur, Amballur, Varandarappilly: Buses will turn left at Mundupalam Junction, terminate at Sakthan Stand, and return via Kattukaran Junction.
KSRTC Services
- Towards Chalakudy and Ernakulam: Buses from the KSRTC stand will proceed via Koorkenchery and Chiyyaram. Returning services will reach Mundupalam via Ollur and Kuriachira, turn left, and enter the stand via Mathrubhumi Junction.
- Ordinary services to Angamaly, Chalakudy, Puthukkad, and Irinjalakuda: Services will terminate at Sakthan Thampuran Stand and return from there.
- Services from the western region: Turn right from Lulu Junction, enter via West Fort, Calvary Road, Poothole, and return along the same route.
- From Shornur, Vajikkadavu, and Medical College areas: Buses will reach Lulu Junction via Patturaikkal and Poonkunnam, turn left, and enter the stand via Ayyanthole, West Fort, Calvary Road, Poonkunnam, returning along the same route.
Instructions for other small vehicles
- Vehicles heading towards Mannuthi, Palakkad, and Ernakulam should proceed via Pension Moola, Nellankara, and Mukkattukkara.
- From Kunnamkulam to Palakkad (except buses and trailers): Vehicles must turn around at Mundoor, proceed via Kottekkad and Viyyur Bridge to the Power House, and continue via Ponganamkadu and Chirakkode-Mudikkode.
- From Kunnamkulam to Ernakulam (except buses and trailers): Vehicles must turn around at Mundur, proceed via Kottekkad–Viyyur Bridge to the Power House, then to Ponganamkadu, continuing via Mukkattukkara.
Authorities urge residents to plan travel in advance and strictly follow traffic police instructions to ensure the smooth conduct of the Prime Minister’s roadshow.
