Thiruvananthapuram: Addressing the people of Kerala on the occasion of India’s 78th Independence Day, Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan criticised the nation’s inadequate disaster warning system, which he claimed often leads to significant loss of life and property.

Referring to recent landslides in Wayanad and other natural disasters in the state, Vijayan said, “The failure of our country to predict natural disasters in advance is a major cause of concern. This failure is costing us dearly. I am not talking about routine alerts; we need to be well-prepared for such disasters in the future. Look at what is happening around the world. It is high time India improves disaster preparedness standards and implements efficient and effective mechanisms.”

Kerala observed a subdued Independence Day celebration due to the tragic Wayanad landslides, which reportedly claimed over 400 lives. Pinarayi Vijayan called for unity, expressing hope that the people of Kerala would come together to overcome these challenging times. He emphasised the importance of Independence Day in fostering a spirit of unity among the people.
