Idukki: Pambla Dam shutters to open at 10 pm; residents along Periyar asked to stay alert

Idukki, Kerala: The shutters of the Pambla Dam will be opened from 10 pm on Thursday (July 30) after the reservoir's water level crossed the red alert mark following continuous heavy rainfall in its catchment areas.

The order to open the dam shutters was issued by the Idukki District Collector as a precautionary measure amid the rising inflow. The reservoir's water level has reached 252.10 metres, exceeding the red alert level of 252 metres, prompting the Emergency Planning Manager to declare a red alert.

Authorities have permitted the dam shutters to be raised as required to release up to 500 cumecs of water downstream. The dam's maximum storage level is 253 metres.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued an Orange Alert for Idukki district, forecasting continued heavy rainfall, which could further increase inflows into the reservoir.

With water set to be released from the dam, the District Disaster Management Authority has urged residents living along both banks of the Periyar River to remain on high alert and avoid venturing into the river or low-lying areas.

Officials said necessary instructions have been issued to the Police, Fire and Rescue Services, Health Department, and Tahsildars to ensure preparedness for any emergency arising from the release of water.
