Ormathoni project: 24,221 identified at risk of Dementia in Kerala

Alappuzha: A total of 24,221 people have been identified as being at risk of dementia through the ‘Ormathoni’ project implemented by the Social Security Mission. The findings emerged from screenings conducted among beneficiaries of the Vayomithram scheme.
Screenings were carried out by visiting the homes of people aged above 60. Those identified will undergo further evaluation, and follow-up treatment will be ensured based on the severity of the condition.
The Ormathoni project aims at data collection, screening, specialist treatment, and rehabilitation of people affected by dementia. Those showing symptoms will be provided care and support to reduce difficulties. Individuals diagnosed with the condition will be referred to nearby hospitals.
The project was announced in the 2023–24 financial year. In the first phase during 2024–25, symptoms were detected in 238 individuals. In 2025–26, 24,221 people were identified. Two rehabilitation centres will be set up in Thrissur for confirmed patients, though the final operational details are yet to be decided.
Beneficiaries were identified through Vayomithram, a scheme implemented by the Social Security Mission for senior citizens. Services provided include free medicines at the doorstep through mobile clinics, palliative care counselling for bedridden patients, and help desk support. Dementia screening is also conducted during home visits. Staff will receive training in eight phases for this purpose.
