Kozhikode: Strict restrictions have been imposed at Thamarassery Ghat for tourists in connection with Onam. The measures were taken due to landslides in the ghat area.

From Thursday, for three days, gatherings or parking of vehicles at the viewpoints along the Thamarassery Ghat will not be permitted.

Restrictions are already in place at the 9th hairpin bend viewpoint.

A landslide occurred on August 26, causing widespread panic. Massive rocks, soil and trees collapsed near the viewpoint area of the Thamarassery Pass. The debris fell from the rock-filled left side of the road, burying a large section of the National Highway.

With boulders, mud and trees falling from several metres above, the landslide completely blocked traffic in both directions — even pedestrian movement became impossible. Authorities then sealed off the pass and fully restricted traffic. The debris was removed and a thorough safety inspection was completed before traffic was restored.
