Retired nurse’s viral talk on antimicrobial resistance wins praise from Kerala health minister
Thiruvananthapuram: A simple train journey turned into an inspiring health awareness session when Pulomja, a retired nurse from Haripad, Alappuzha, shared valuable information about the dangers of antibiotic overuse with her fellow passengers. Her impromptu talk on the Maveli Express has since gone viral, earning praise from Kerala's Health Minister, Veena George.
Pulomja, who served in the health department for 31 years and received the state award for Best Nurse in 2007, spoke about antimicrobial resistance (AMR) during her return journey from Mookambika Temple on December 19. "When I introduced myself, I mentioned that I had a word of caution regarding health. The passengers were interested, and I began speaking," she said. Her session highlighted the dangers of excessive antibiotic use and explained how antibiotics are effective only against bacterial infections. Passengers, including the train ticket examiner (TTE), listened attentively, taking photos and videos that later went viral on social media.

Health Minister Veena George commended Pulomja's dedication and social commitment in a Facebook post, calling her work "touching" and a source of "pride and joy." The minister also personally contacted Pulomja to congratulate her and promised to meet her in person.
After retiring in 2018, Pulomja has been actively involved in the One Health initiative as a district mentor in Alappuzha, conducting training sessions and awareness activities as part of the antibiotic literacy campaign.
The health department recently launched a large-scale AMR awareness campaign, and Pulomja's efforts have become a shining example of how individual dedication can contribute to public health. "Dedication, sincerity, and love for the work—Pulomja’s efforts are an inspiration," said Minister George, urging others to take pride in her impactful work.
