Actor Parvathy Thiruvothu has openly criticised and mocked the Kerala government as it has been decided to close police cases registered based on statements recorded in the Hema Committee report. Her response came shortly after news broke about the police’s move to discontinue the cases, and she expressed her views via an Instagram story, tagging Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan.

Parvathy questioned the government’s priorities, writing, “Now can we focus on the actual reason this committee was formed? Putting policies in place to help make regulations in the industry? What is happening with that? No rush, eh? It’s only been five and a half years since the report was submitted.”

The police decision to close the cases follows the reluctance of several complainants to pursue the matters further. The special investigation team had initially registered 35 cases, out of which 21 were previously closed. The remaining 14 cases are also set to be closed, with reports expected to be submitted to the courts within this month.

The Hema Committee was appointed to study issues prevalent in the Malayalam film industry, especially those faced by female artists, after a slew of shocking revelations of assault and mistreatment emerged over the last few years, also in the backdrop of the high-profile actress assault case.

The Hema Committee report sparked major controversy, and in its aftermath, several individuals came forward on social media with further allegations of sexual harassment. A total of 40 cases were registered across various police stations related to these complaints. Chargesheets have been filed in 30 of these cases, involving notable actors including Mukesh, Maniyanpilla Raju, Siddique, and director Ranjith. Legal proceedings in these cases are ongoing.
