Man who suffered burns while raising suicide threat succumbs to injuries

Neyyattinkara (Thiruvananthapuram): The man who attempted suicide by setting himself on fire amid eviction procedures succumbed to burn injuries. The deceased is identified as Neyyattinkara Nellimoodu Pongil native Rajan (47). Rajan and wife Ambili were trying to resist the eviction by raising suicide threat.

Rajan died on Sunday by 12 at night. He had suffered 70 percent burn injuries and was being treated at Thiruvananthapuram medical college. The incident took place on December 22. Rajan and family were residing in a poramboke land in Lakshamveedu colony.

The police and authorities were trying to evict Rajan and family from their house on the basis of a court order. With this, Rajan and his wife Ambili doused themselves with petrol and held a lighter raising suicide threat. A police officer tried to shove off the lighter from his hand and accidently fire spread all over their body.

Meanwhile, Rajan gave statement that he did not try to set fire but the policeman’s attempt to shove off the lighter resulted in the tragedy. His wife Ambili remains in critical condition. Their relatives informed that his body should be cremated in the house from where they were being evicted.

When Rajan and wife were undergoing treatment in medical college with severe burn injuries, it was their children who disclosed the statement against the police through social media. Rajan’s statement was reported by the media.
