Pathanamthitta: Tourist buses in Kerala are creating increasing noise pollution on the roads, with loudspeakers blaring music outside the vehicles. The Motor Vehicle Department has taken notice and is planning to take action against such buses, warning that offenders will be caught soon. A recent incident in Munnar town saw locals clash with tourists aboard a noisy bus.

Clashes over external speakers

Disputes are often sparked by the loud music coming from the vehicle's external speakers, which becomes even more disruptive during school and college excursions. These external speakers, known as ‘vocals,’ are often placed at the front or rear of the bus in addition to the regular internal speakers. While they are intended to play music when the vehicle is stationary, some buses are now using them while driving, leading to increased noise.

MVD tightens regulations

Following the Vadakancheri bus accident in 2023, Kerala Motor Vehicle Department had implemented stricter regulations on tourist buses. As part of these rules, bus operators are required to submit their vehicle details to the Regional Transport Office at least seven days before starting a trip. The buses must also undergo an inspection before any excursion, and the inspection report should be kept by the vehicle owner and the RTO officer who conducts the check. One inspection every 30 days is sufficient.

Lack of inspection compliance this year

However, there have been reports that this inspection process has not been fully enforced this year. The MVD is expected to step up inspections and ensure compliance with these rules moving forward.
