Mood of the Voter Survey: LDF faces backlash over controversies; NDA gains favourable climate

# News Desk

As Kerala stands on the threshold of the 2026 assembly elections, a new comprehensive survey indicates that the ruling Left Democratic Front (LDF) faces significant political headwinds from past controversies.

The Mathrubhumi-CORE 'Mood of the State' survey reveals that a majority of the electorate believes the Sabarimala and gold smuggling cases remain potent issues that could jeopardize the ruling alliance's prospects.

A Burden for the Ruling Front

The survey data shows a clear consensus on which alliance bears the brunt of these scandals. 52.09% of voters believe these controversies will negatively impact the LDF.

In sharp contrast, only 11.33% think the United Democratic Front (UDF) will be affected, and a negligible 1.31% believe the BJP will face any fallout. Another 19.24% of respondents view these issues as irrelevant to the current electoral cycle.

The sentiment against the LDF is not uniform across the state but is particularly pronounced in certain belts.

The southern region shows the strongest reaction, with 56.89% of voters predicting a negative impact on the LDF, followed by the northern region at 53.28%. Central Kerala appears slightly more insulated, with the figure dropping to 45.19%.

Community perspectives on LDF's potential loss

For the segment of the population that believes an LDF government will not return for a third term, these controversies are cited as a primary reason for their skepticism.

* 9.93% of all respondents who predict an LDF defeat specifically point to the Sabarimala issue as the cause.

* Among Hindu voters who foresee an LDF loss, this sentiment is even stronger, with 13.33% citing the temple controversy.

* The issue also resonates with 10.43% of Christian voters and 5.62% of Muslim voters who predict a change in government.

The NDA's 'favourable Climate'

While the controversies appear to drain support from the ruling front, they act as a catalyst for the NDA alliance. The survey analysis suggests that rather than harming the BJP, these issues create a favourable political climate for them, helping to consolidate their core base.

Despite the high visibility of these scandals in public discourse, the survey highlights a curious paradox: when asked to name the single most important factor driving their vote, only 3.16% of voters named Sabarimala or the gold smuggling case as their primary influence.

This suggests that while the controversies color the overall perception of the government, they may be secondary to broader issues like development, which remains the top priority for 36.13% of the electorate.

As the state prepares for a historic battle, the question remains whether the LDF can pivot the conversation back to its development agenda or if the ghosts of past controversies will ultimately decide the fate of the 2026 mandate.
