Milma Chairman KS Mani said that claims suggesting Milma milk is entirely made from milk powder are part of an attempt to undermine and destroy the trust people have in Milma.

Under the FSSAI Act, cow’s milk sold in Kerala must contain 8.5 SNF (solids-not-fat) and 3 per cent fat. The average SNF level of milk procured locally is 8.4. If milk is marketed at that level, there is a possibility of legal action even against Milma’s Managing Director and Chairman, he said.

To make up for the shortfall of one percent, milk powder is added. Those who do not want milk with added milk powder can opt for milk containing 8.4 SNF and 3 per cent fat. Milk powder is produced by removing water from milk and drying it. Milma is not an organisation that functions with profit as its sole motive; maintaining consumers’ trust is Milma’s real success, he added.

No one needs to worry about the quality of Milma milk. Minister Chinchu Rani said that milk is procured from dairy farmers only after ensuring quality, and farmers are paid accordingly. The minister and the Milma Chairman were speaking at the session titled “Changing Times, Enduring Goodness” at the Mathrubhumi International Literary Festival.
