36-year-old man found dead in Peermade sub jail; suicide suspected

Idukk: A 36-year-old man, arrested under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act, was found dead inside Peermade sub jail on Friday, with authorities suspecting suicide.

The deceased, identified as Kumar, was found hanging in the bathroom of the jail between 8:30 am and 9:00 am, according to the FIR.

Jail officials said Kumar died by suicide using a plastic rope during the morning breakfast break when inmates were released from their cells. He was immediately taken to Peerumade Taluk Hospital, where he was declared dead on arrival.

Authorities said Kumar had been showing signs of depression in recent days. He had been in custody since his arrest in connection with a POCSO case registered in January this year.

Following a post-mortem, the body was handed over to his relatives. A police investigation is underway to determine how the rope was obtained and to rule out any foul play.
