Peruvannamuzhi: Thottiyil Aziz resident of Udayanagar, Muthukad narrowly escaped a tragic danger when wild elephants wreaked havoc in the vicinity of his home. The alarming event unfolded on Thursday night at around 10 pm, as two wild elephants invaded the area, leaving destruction in their wake.

The elephants demolished every meter of the solar fence and plunged the region into darkness after destroying two power poles. With the trees uprooted, the electric post came crashing down. Aziz's backyard suffered considerable damage as ten gourds and banana plants were uprooted.

At 3 in the morning, Aziz came out of the house and the wild animals rushed towards him. Acting swiftly, he managed to escape from the elephants, seeking refuge for the night at the Udayanagar bus stop.  Later, he sought shelter at Kattikal Ali's house. Reflecting on his narrow escape, Aziz said that he was extremely lucky to have escaped from the elephants.

These elephants also caused destruction of trees in the backyards of Mulangothra Vipin and Sajeevan, a native of Pillapperuvanna.

This was not the first time elephants had ventured into the area. It had made an appearance on Wednesday night as well, prompting forest guards to intervene and chase it back into the forest. Despite Aziz's efforts to inform the authorities about the elephant's rampage and the damage caused on Thursday, the forest guards failed to respond.

Meanwhile, Chacko, residing in the Payyanikotta area of Muthukad, has become accustomed to frequent visits from elephants near his house. An elephant's previous visit resulted in the destruction of three palm trees and the decimation of fodder. Chacko's house lies adjacent to the forest, and the elephant used to frequently arrive in the area to feast on jackfruits. As the jackfruits ran out, the animal turned to destroy agricultural crops.

Elephants have also been observed wandering through the Perambra Estate under the Plantation Corporation during the night. The Vattakayam, Chempanoda, and Alampara regions of Peruvannamuzhi have fallen victim to similar crop destruction in recent days.
