Pride of Kerala: 8 Malayalis win Padma Awards including VS Achuthanandan, Mammootty

Thiruvananthapuram: Kerala is celebrating a moment of pride as several distinguished Malayalis have been honoured with this year’s Padma Awards, recognising their outstanding contributions across public life, arts, science, journalism and social service.
Late former Chief Minister and CPM leader V. S. Achuthanandan has been awarded the Padma Vibhushan posthumously, marking national recognition for his decades-long service to public life. Two other eminent Malayalis, senior journalist and author P. Narayanan and former Supreme Court judge Justice K. T. Thomas, have also received the Padma Vibhushan for their exceptional contributions.
In the Padma Bhushan category, legendary actor Mammootty has been honoured for his iconic contribution to Indian cinema, while Bharath Dharma Jana Sena (BDJS) party leader Vellapally Natesan has been recognised for his work in public affairs and social leadership.
Kerala’s presence continues in the Padma Shri list as well. Environmental activist Kollakkayil Devaki Amma, who turned her land into a flourishing forest and became a symbol of grassroots conservation, has been honoured for social work.

Celebrated Mohiniyattam exponent and dance teacher Kalamandalam Vimala Menon, founder and director of the Kerala Natya Academy in Thiruvananthapuram, has received the Padma Shri for her lifelong dedication to classical arts and cultural education.
Veteran space scientist Dr. A. E. Muthunayagam, regarded as the “Father of Propulsion Technology” in India’s space programme, has also been awarded the Padma Shri for his pioneering work that strengthened the country’s space capabilities.
The Padma Awards will be presented by the President of India at a ceremonial function at Rashtrapati Bhavan in New Delhi.
