Madurai: At the Central committee meeting on Sunday morning, veteran Kerala leader MA Baby has been appointed as the General Secretary of the CPM. He will be the CPM's sixth General Secretary.

After EMS Namboodiripad, MA Baby is the second Malayali to reach this position from the Kerala unit.

Polit Bureau Coordinator Prakash Karat recommended MA Baby's name. He explained that Baby was recommended considering his seniority in the PB. MA Baby has been working in the central leadership of the CPM since 2016. He joined the PB in 2012 and became a member of the central committee in 1989.

During his tenure as Kerala's Education Minister from 2006 to 2011, Baby introduced several key reforms aimed at improving the state's education system. He played a key role in implementing the single-window admission process for higher secondary education, which helped bring order and efficiency to the admission framework. His term also saw the introduction of grading systems in high schools and increased transparency through continuous internal assessments and evaluation methods.

MA Baby served as a Member of Parliament in the Rajya Sabha from 1986 to 1998.
