Kozhikode: A worker was killed and two others injured after a portion of land caved in at an under-construction building site in Palazhi, Kozhikode, on Sunday morning. The incident occurred around 11 am while piling work was underway for a flat.

The deceased has been identified as Elanchal (30), a native of West Bengal. His body was found after a two-hour-long search and rescue operation, involving fire and police personnel as well as JCB machine.

According to officials, a large section of the soil suddenly collapsed, trapping three workers under the debris. While two were rescued with minor injuries, Elanchal could not be saved.

A local resident shared that the area had shown warning signs earlier. “Two days ago, part of the land had already slipped. We warned the workers and even told the building owner, but no one listened. They were only focused on completing the construction,” said a neighbour.

The nearby resident also revealed that locals had raised complaints six months ago when the construction started, despite the project having official approval. “This place is known to be prone for landslips. People use that area as a walkway too. We don’t know if anyone else is still trapped,” they added.

Nearby residents are now questioning how such projects are being approved in landslide-prone zones. Many are demanding answers from the authorities and stricter monitoring of future construction.
