Thevalakkara (Kollam): The family has confirmed that Suja, the mother of Midhun (13), the Class 8 student who died of electrocution at his school in Thevalakkara of Kollam, has been informed of the tragedy. Suja, who had gone abroad for work, is currently in Turkey.

She had travelled to Turkey along with the family she was working for in Kuwait, on a 15-day trip. Suja was contacted around 6 pm on Thursday evening.

Public representatives informed that they had contacted the Indian Embassy in Kuwait and initiated steps to expedite her return to India as soon as possible.

Relatives confirmed that Suja was reached by phone around 6 pm on Thursday. They had earlier said that decisions regarding the funeral and other matters would only be made after speaking with her.

MP Kodikunnil Suresh earlier had said that the Indian Embassy in Kuwait would be contacted to take necessary action. Through the embassy, arrangements will be made to bring her home as soon as possible, he has said.

Kovoor Kunjumon MLA also responded stating that upon learning of the accident, he had gone directly to the hospital where the child had been taken, not to the school. He added that both Education Minister V Sivankutty and Finance Minister K N Balagopal, along with the district collector, had reached the hospital while Midhun’s post-mortem was being conducted.

The MLA noted that although he had attended several functions at the school, he had never needed to go near the school ground, which is why the hazardous shed had not previously come to his attention. He expressed his condolences to the bereaved family and assured that strict action would be taken against those responsible for the negligence.
