Kerala workplace abuse: Police intensify search for Manaf; record statements from staff

Perumbavoor (Kerala): Kerala Police have intensified their search for Manaf, a former manager at a marketing company facing multiple complaints of abusive behavior towards employees.
Earlier, a shocking video surfaced, showing the accused forcing staff members at his company to perform humiliating tasks, including degrading punishments. The footage depicts a man crawling on his knees with a leash tied around his neck, being led like a dog.
A case was later registered following complaints from two employees featured in the video, along with another female employee who alleged similar mistreatment. She claimed that Manaf treated her the same way he treated the young male staff but asserted that she did not allow him to film her. Two cases have been registered against Manaf, one of which involves insulting the modesty of a woman.
Based on legal consultation, authorities have decided to file a second case against Manaf using statements from the victims. While the police and labour department maintain that there was no evidence of labour harassment, sources suggest the police are moving quickly to bring Manaf into custody.
Labour Department records employee statements
The Labour Department has recorded statements from employees of Keltra, the firm at the centre of the controversy. A team led by Ernakulam District Enforcement Labour Officer P.G. Vinod visited the women’s hostel in Arakapady and the men’s hostel in Pattimattom to record their statements.
The statements were collected from nine female employees and five male employees staying at the hostels. During the visit, the team also inspected the living conditions and safety arrangements at the hostels. The employees stated they receive regular salaries and incentives, and that the company covers their food expenses.
On Monday, the department conducted inspections at the factories of Hindustan Power Links in Kalamassery and Edayar. These factories supply products to Keltra. The Labour Officer confirmed that their warehouse in Angamaly will also be inspected, and worker statements will be recorded there as part of the inquiry. The Labour Minister has instructed officials to conduct a thorough investigation into the alleged abuse.
