Knowing traffic camera locations isn't enough to escape from them, MVD can move them easily

Thiruvananthapuram: Breaking before passing by a speed checking camera is a habit of overspeeding drivers. This may not be possible anymore as the new cameras installed by Motor Vehicles Department on the roads to nab the rule-breakers will not be static. Instead, the department will keep changing their positions. To make this easy, the cameras are connected to the control rooms via mobile internet instead of wires. Besides, they are functioning on solar energy.
The poles on which 725 new cameras are installed can be moved easily. MVD will move them according to the traffic on the road. They will start functioning by the end of this month.
The 3D Doppler cameras that work on artificial intelligence can detect traffic violations from a distance of up to 200 meters.
The cameras will automatically detect riders without seat belts and helmets, two-wheelers with more than two passengers, and the use of mobile phones while driving. Some cameras can detect and signal violations. There is also a facility to scan the number board and compare it with the information on the Vahan website. If the records are not accurate, the system will detect that as well.
Vehicles without insurance, permit, fitness and registration will be caught on the spot. In addition to ambulances, there are exemptions for speed control for police, VVIP vehicles and fire force in emergencies. The Department of Motor Vehicles invested Rs 235 crore in the new technology. The amount will be transferred to Keltron as 20 instalments over a period of five years.
