Know what’s in Kerala govt’s Onam kit and who is eligible; distribution to begin today
On the very first day of the Onam season, Atham, the Kerala government is set to distribute free Onam kits to Antyodaya Anna Yojana (AAY) ration card holders and residents of welfare institutions. With Thiruvonam, the 10th day of the season, fast approaching, the move aims to ensure that no family is left out of celebrations.
The state-level inauguration is scheduled for today (Tuesday), August 26, at 9.30 am in Thiruvananthapuram District Panchayat Hall. Food and Civil Supplies Minister G.R. Anil will inaugurate the programme.
What is inside Onam kit
Each kit is put together like a festive hamper, offering 14 essential items that are both part of everyday meals and traditional Onam feasts:
- Sugar
- Coconut oil
- Toor dal (thuvara parippu)
- Green gram dal (cherupayar parippu)
- Cowpea (vanpayar)
- Cashew nuts
- Milma ghee
- Gold tea
- Payasam mix
- Sambar powder
- Chilli powder
- Turmeric powder
- Coriander powder
- Salt
Reaching homes before Thiruvonam
The Food and Civil Supplies Department has ensured that all AAY ration card holders and welfare homes will receive the kits before Thiruvonam. The timely delivery is designed to guarantee that Kerala’s harvest festival is celebrated in every household.
