Khader Committee recommends extending High School education in Kerala to Class 12

Thiruvananthapuram: In a major move for reform, the Khader Committee report has recommended that all high schools in the State be converted into secondary schools up to Class 12. Apart from the structural change of merging high school and higher secondary, this proposal is to ensure in-depth learning for children.
Another important recommendation is that only those teachers' organisations with a participation of a certain percentage of teachers should be recognised and a referendum should be held for this purpose.
All those who teach in classes ranging from pre-school to 12 should be brought under the single definition of teachers. When doing this, a referendum should be held by including all the teachers in service in one category.
In order for teachers' unions to be recognised, a certain percentage of the total membership must be supported by teachers. A number not less than 18 percent is preferable.
It is recommended to increase all high schools up to 12 with an aim of quality education. The new school curriculum emphasises vocational learning. It is suggested that children's aptitude should be understood from Class 8 and study should be implemented accordingly from Class 9.
Classes 11 and 12 will include subject-based learning along with vocational training in accordance with the special aptitude of the children.
