Thiruvananthapuram: The AI traffic cameras in Kerala, which had been temporarily out of service, are now fully operational. Following the release of funds to Keltron, the cameras have resumed monitoring traffic violations, issuing heavy fines for offences such as seatbelt and helmet violations, and even for crossing yellow lines. Motorists are receiving SMS notifications about their fines, with a warning that unpaid fines will be referred to court after seven days.

Recently, fines through AI cameras were delayed due to technical issues. Traffic violations were widespread while the cameras were not operational, with many drivers taking risk of ignoring it. Last week, people became aware of the cameras' resumption when they started receiving fine notifications on their mobile phones. Many people have complained about being fined for driving past while the yellow light is on or stopping on the zebra crossing.

Many residents have reported receiving hefty fines after the cameras resumed working. Santhosh, a local from Pongumoodu, was fined Rs 3,000 twice for breaking the signal at Pattam Junction, and another Rs 3,000 for crossing a yellow line the following day. Receiving delayed notifications is also a cause of concern. Several drivers have found out that the seven-day payment deadline had already passed when they tried to settle their fines.

Complaints over late notifications and road conditions

The delay in receiving fine notifications has left many motorists frustrated. The fine amount is payable online through a link provided in the SMS, but some drivers are finding the seven-day payment window closed by the time they attempt payment. People have also raised concerns about the lack of improvements in road infrastructure. Many areas of the city, especially major intersections, are still lacking clear road markings and functional signal systems, which were previously affected by ongoing Smart City road construction projects.

While the AI cameras are catching traffic violators, commuters are questioning the fairness of the fines, arguing that the lack of updated road markings and clear signals is contributing to violations. With many road changes and loss of one-way systems in several areas, people are calling for better road infrastructure before enforcing strict penalties.
